quality of life

Enhancing the quality of life for Glen Cove residents is a priority of Mayor Reggie Spinello and his administration.  Quality of life programs include a broad range of initiatives that serve the welfare, safety and wellbeing of the Glen Cove community.  Here are some highlights of Glen Cove’s Quality of Life efforts:

Illegal Housing

Mayor Spinello, City Attorney Charles McQuair and members of the City’s Code Enforcement team have put into place an aggressive plan of action to investigate and prosecute those individuals who are guilty of the unlawful practice of illegal housing.   Illegal housing presents situations of overcrowding in homes; unauthorized cellar, basement and attic apartments and Glen Cove code violations.   It is a threat to the safety of our neighborhoods, an abuse of our city services, a challenge for our schools and this illegal practice can tarnish the character of Glen Cove’s wonderful neighborhoods.

Since 2014 the City has collected over $200,000 in fines, resolved over 35 properties of illegal occupancy conditions (compared to an average of 6 cases in previous years) and is now pursuing the resolution of 30 cases  pending in the court system.  To report illegal housing in your neighborhood, please call the Glen Cove Code Enforcement Department at (516) 320-7869.

Glen Cove CDA Provides Housing Repairs for Senior Citizens and the Disabled

The City has re-established the Residential Rehabilitation Program for income-eligible senior citizens 60 and over and/or handicapped homeowners.  The Glen Cove Community Development Agency (CDA) has acquired block grants to provide housing repairs for eligible senior citizens and disabled persons.  Recent program applicants have received funding that helped to repair a leaky roof, fix broken windows, and install new doors for energy conservation.  For more information on this program, contact the CDA at (516) 676-1625.

The Glen Cove Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit and Neighborhood Walking Tours

The Glen Cove Police Department has re-stablished its Crime Prevention Unit.  This unit works undercover and their goal is to pursue and prosecute covert criminal operations with in Glen Cove.  In addition, Neighborhood Walking tours were also introduced whereby members of the Police Department, the Mayor and the Code Enforcement team spend time talking with residents about any potential safety concerns and potential illegal activities occurring in their neighborhoods.  This is an opportunity for residents to engage in an open dialogue with local authorities.

Glen Cove Rated as one of the Nation’s “Top 100 Safest Cities”

Glen Cove’s Police Department provides prompt, courteous, efficient and effective safety and law enforcement services to our residents.  While many other Long Island towns rely on Nassau County Police to provide police services, Glen Cove’s localized police force employs a community policing strategy which has resulted in Glen Cove being rated as one of the nation’s “Top 100 Safest Cities” according to SafeWise.  Glen Cove was one of only two Long Island communities which ranked in their “Top 100 Safest Cities” nationwide crime survey report.
